It also might be a bit of a cop-out and covering for simple differences in artistic license but the differences in armor could just come from the fact that not everyone gets the same gear. The higher ranked ones probably get more of a choice in the armor they want to use. The lower ranked guys don't get to choose their gear, they get whatever is handed to them when they're deployed. Master Chief is the coolest of cool guys, so when he tells the quartermaster he needs the SCOUT variant of Mjolnir Mk V, you ask him if he wants the command uplink doodads or not. You don't let Private Snuffy choose his own gear because he's an idiot and he'd get an EOD suit and weld spikes to it or something dumb. Given that Zealots are fanatically loyal and have had considerable combat experience to get to that rank, it's not a bad idea to have some detatchments of Zealots for incredibly high priority tasks (kind of like Spartan teams).Īs for the armor thing, it's probably similar to how Spartans have their own armor variants or even uniforms varying between the Marines and the UNSC Army. The Sangheili logic is that if someone has innate talent or skill, that will be more than enough to differentiate them from their peers on the battlefield and they will naturally rise through the ranks. That's in contrast to the UNSC (Which is probably very similar to most first world militaries) where they take people who demonstrate skills and fast-track them into developing those skills. That means that those Zealots or Generals are veterans of dozens of campaigns and have fought in the frontlines in all of them. Their leaders got those positions through demonstrating skill in battle, usually by inflicting casualties. It might seem a bit weird but the Sangheili are an incredibly martial but also meritocratic culture. It would be more or less the same as how Carter is a Commander yet he usually just does his own thing with Noble Team, he has that rank so he can't get ordered around in the field to something else that a lieutenant or captain thinks is more important. At the same time not all Zealots hold command roles. Halopedia notes that Field Marshal is a rank exclusive to Zealots, I think that means it's fair to say that most officers that would be considered general staff officers in a Human military are probably all Zealots. The stealth elites in Halo CE might actually be part of the same unit as the black armored spec ops elites but wearing armor specialized for infiltration over protection, having no shields but persistent camouflage. The active camo maroon armor with weak shielding worn by Reach Spec ops elites serves their infiltration and ambush role against Noble Team, whereas the black, well shielded, spec ops elites we see in Halo CE are all deployed as shock troopers against the flood, making stronger shields a higher priority then stealth. The Reach zealots and field marshall (which is certainly a command rank worthy of gold armor) could be wearing maroon with active camo because it's stealthier and better for their role of artifact retrieval. The black armored spec-ops elites from CE, might be from a different spec-ops unit then the maroon armored ones in Reach for example, even if both serve within the Fleet of Particular Justice.Įdit: another possibility is that combat harnesses are mission specific. There is also a huge variety of equipment across different fleets, and maybe even units. The field marshall and his zealots make up an artifact retrieval team, so don't really fit within the usual chain of command. Many, if not all of the Generals seen in Reach are probably also zealots. Zealots often receive command positions due to their fanatical devotion to the covenant and great skill, which is why they're usually seen in Gold armor, which denotes command.
